Feel the Heartbeat of the Ancestors at Obon

BK Taiko will help launch the Obon Festival at the Albuquerque Sasebo Japanese Garden on Friday, August 14, 2026. The event begins with a 6:25 p.m. procession starting at the ABQ BioPark Main Plaza and continuing to the Green Festival Pavilion. BK Taiko will also perform twice during the evening, first at 7:30 p.m. and again at 8:40 p.m., closing out the event. Tickets are available through the ABQ BioPark website.

Obon is a traditional Japanese observance honoring ancestors whose spirits are believed to temporarily return to the world of the living. Celebrated in Japan for centuries, Bon Odori are traditional community folk dances performed during Obon to the beat of taiko drums, bringing people together in shared movement to honor ancestors and express gratitude. Another cherished tradition is toro nagashi, in which families float illuminated paper lanterns down rivers to ceremonially guide the spirits back to the spirit world.

Taiko is far more than drumming. A 2,000-year-old art form with roots in Japan, it combines synchronized percussion with the discipline, precision, and power of martial arts-inspired choreography. At the professional level, taiko demands extraordinary strength, stamina, and mental focus. Today, there are more than 800 active taiko groups in the United States.
